The Tersk was first developed in the 1920s and 1940s at the Tersk and Stavropol Studs in Russia. The Tersk was bred mainly from the Strelets Arabians and has since been continually improved by Kabardin, Thoroughbred, Arabian, and Russian Don blood. By 1948, the Tersk breed was officially recognized.
