The Lewitz Pony is one of the more recent pony breeds (studbook opened in 1976). They were created by Ulrich Scharfenorth, a company manager from the former East-Germany, from coloured pony mares which were bred to Trakenher and Arab horses. They are always pinto coloured, mostly tobiano, with thick bi-coloured mane and tail. They are a tall, versatile pony, useful as a child's pony or for driving. The breed is very rare and was threatened with extinction in the 1980's, surviving only thanks to some passionate people. Endangered breed.
